Metal and Soul Update

Metal and Soul Update

Our FIRST Robotics team, Metal and Soul, competed this past Friday and Saturday, March 10-11, 2017 at Kettering University. The robot was able to successfully deliver game pieces during several matches to assist their alliances. We did encounter some mechanical difficulties which kept us from qualifying for the elimination rounds. The team did not come home empty handed as they were awarded the Chairman's Award.

The Chairman's Award is the most prestigious award at FIRST, it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST. It is presented to the team judged to have the most significant measurable impact of its partnerships among its participants and community over a sustained period, not just a single build season. The winner is able to demonstrate progress towards FIRST's mission of transforming our culture.

Celebrating our 10th Anniversary as a team, we chose an" Our Journey" theme for our presentation with the presenters assuming the role of Flight Attendants. The Judges' comments included, "Character and passion fuel this team's expedition to new heights. As stewards of their community they provide fire and safety training, help feed the hungry, provide patient goody bags and clean up roadways. They promote college readiness through a career expo and a 'Leading-through-Reading' program. It's full STEAM ahead and a focus on FIRST including: Hands-on-Science, STEM Zones, FRC Kickoff events, a programming summer camp, FRC Design Reviews and shared fundraising. Linked to fellow travelers world-wide, they navigate their journey with surveys and a culture of continuous improvement, taking flight and escaping the bounds of Earth. It takes more than Metal to soar, it takes Soul."

This Chairman's Award has already earned the team a slot at the State Championship Easter weekend. They will be competing again April 7-8, 2017 at Marysville HS and have aimed their sight on the World Championship in St. Louis at the end of April.
