St. Clair County – COVID-19 Daily Media Update #4

As of 3-22-20 at 4:00pm, the State of Michigan is reporting 1,035 confirmed cases, including eight (8) deaths. St. Clair County remains at seven (7) confirmed cases. St. Clair County Health Department is monitoring 42 people under investigation, along with 73 of their contacts.
Dr. Annette Mercatante, Medical Health Officer explains why the St. Clair County Health Department does not name potential exposure locations; “When confirmed cases are identified, it is very likely community wide transmission is already present. Everyone should be following all recommended prevention measures and advisories to help slow down further spread.”
The St. Clair County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) continues interagency coordination, information sharing, decision making and response planning efforts. The EOC will remain active throughout the COVID-19 public health emergency.

Update 3-19-2020 Good afternoon Capac Family,

This morning Governor Whitmer and Dr. Rice (Michigan Department of Education Superintendent) provided updates to superintendents across the State.  Please understand that their jobs are extremely difficult and managing information that changes by the minute, hour, day, and week is NO easy task. They are doing the best that they can with the information they have, as are we.

That being said, Capac Community Schools, first thoughts and actions are to keep our students, staff, families, and communities as safe as possible.  We will continue to base all decisions based on those principles and along with guidance from our local health department, State government, and Federal government.

Regarding the following;

School closings – at this time schools will remain closed through April 5th with classes resuming April 6th. To date, there has been no action taken by the State Legislature to “hold harmless” school funding or to forgive the days we were closed by the Governor.  They continue to work on a bill to cover both of these. There has been no decision to close schools for a longer period of time. Should the Governor decide to do that she will announce that.

Education – this is quite possibly one of the most difficult.  While our District is a “one to one” (all students have a device/chromebook) not all students have access to the internet.  Even if internet providers are willing to supply internet for free you may not reside in an area where a company provides free internet services.  Handing out packets of worksheets is just as difficult. Without the internet who is available to help students with questions? How do parents get and return “hard copies” of worksheets with some regularity?  For those with internet service please feel free to email your student’s teacher(s) for information and help with that class/subject. Many teachers, counselors, and administration have posted numerous activities your child can be doing on Facebook, in Google Classroom, or via individual email.

Michigan Merit Curriculum – no guidance on this yet.  Capac Community Schools made the decision to end the Third (3rd) marking period on the last day we had school and allow students an opportunity to turn in work when completed or when we return.  Mrs. Kirby sent out information regarding this yesterday.

State/Federal Testing – the State has applied for a waiver from the Federal Government to suspend testing.  However, this has not been approved yet, therefore, all State and Federal testing will proceed as scheduled.

Spring Activities – at this point all activities, outside of the dates we are closed by order of the Governor, will take place as scheduled.
